getstats Week 20-27 October 2010

The Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education invites you to a series of activities to mark the beginning of the Royal Statistical Society’s 10-year statistical literacy campaign, getstats.

The events run from Wednesday 20 - Wednesday 27 October 2010, with two days in London at the RSS and four in Plymouth at the RSSCSE. The launch of the campaign, on 20 October, is being marked by a read paper to the Society by Chris Wild, Maxine Pfannkuch, Matt Regan (University of Auckland, NZ) and Nick Horton (Smith College, USA). It is entitled 'Towards More Accessible Conceptions of Statistical Inference'. Do not miss this - for many, this paper represents what the RSS 10-year statistical literacy campaign is all about!

Engaging Students in Learning Statistics Event

Statistics plays an important role in the research methodologies, knowledge generation and solving of data-driven problems in most subjects. It is taught across a wide range of academic disciplines at undergraduate and graduate levels in the UK and elsewhere. Traditionally in the UK the statistics courses that were taught outside mathematics and statistics departments were delivered as so-called ‘service teaching’ through mathematical sciences groups within those departments, where colleagues who did the statistics teaching may, or may not, have been qualified in statistics.

RSSCSE 2011 CensusAtSchool joins the ONS for Big Bang Fairs

2011 is Census year and, as part of the promotion for emphasizing the importance of completing the census form,  the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has joined with the long-established RSSCSE CensusAtSchool Project.  Together they will promote the 2011 Census to school children across the country using the Census 2011 theme of  origami shapes, encouraging schools to get involved by filling-in their own online questionnaire.
